Last weekend I ended up in Drumheller intending to spend an evening in the Rosedeer Hotel in Wayne, AB (pop. 30). The only remaining business is apparently haunted as a result of the coal miners in the 20’s getting all indignant and wrecking up the place. For real, apparently someone was tarred and feathered on the 3rd floor! Much to our shagrin, the hotel was closed by the time we got there so we set up camp in front of this.

The next day was spent pissing around, looking at dinosaur fossils and wishing the Creationism Museum was open for a laugh.

Started training with the City this week. My summer job as a “recreation technition” begins next week. I’m both excited and anxious about said position, mostly because it will be my first experience working with youth. But whatever, the kids are alright so I’m expecting things to run swimmingly.

After 7 years of waiting the new Shellac record came out last week. 180 grams of post-modern songwriting and sardonic lyrics of course. Shellac in my opinion are THE antithesis of current radio-rock music. On Shellac records, you will never find anything pro-tooled, pitchshifted, enhanced or falsified in any way. Plus, you can always rely on a good dosage of the absurd to round things out, something “serious” artists of the day never attempt. Personally, I don’t think art should be taken too seriously. Not that I don’t understand that artists are trying to convey intense messages and whatnot, but let’s not kid ourselves, when it comes down to it, the human race is ridiculous. Something I think needs to be embraced more often.

Choke's final show

Ok, realizing that updating this everyday is totally not congruent with my schedule, I resolve to writing weekly recaps. Last week I drank margaritas with the girls at work and told ghost stories. I went to bed late and slept until noon on several occasions. I played a show with the band I’ve given 7 years of my life to. Maybe it was our last, maybe not. Nevertheless, it was incredibly fun and I had my mind blown by Choke who were playing their last show ever. The bromance was in the air and I haven’t been that stoked about live music in a good while.

Lately I’ve been feeling a bit restless and I think the cure will be a road trip. I’m trying to book a couple days off work to make it happen. If it does, the plans I have are amazing and include a haunted hotel and a zaney creationist museum.

A kid at the elementry was hurt today when one of her friends called her a “baby poo poo”. It took loads of effort for me to not bust out laughing.

Many late nights these days. I’ve been enjoying them because soon my wings will be clipped by the City of Edmonton as the summer camp instructor job I have lined up with them will require early wakenings. WTF? Let’s re-configure society and let people sleep for a couple more hours shall we? Ever notice how much better the day is when you wake up at 10 and read the paper in the sun with a cup of coffee? Probably haven’t because you’ve been slaving away. The 40 hour Western work week: Down with it!

On a somewhat hilarious note, my neighbour has started fornicating extremely loudly late at night. The DB’s woke me up the other night and I was both amused and annoyed. A friend of mine suggested photographing the pair in the act and charging them for my services. I declined already feeling like a dirty perv for having herd them. Westerners: Uptight!

I had some fantastic food the other day. The Elvis. Peanut Butter, Tofu and bananas fried between two slices of whole wheat bread. Western cuisine: Amazing! (disgusting?)

Lastly 28 Weeks Later was not as good as I thought it was going to be. I love my dystopic zombie films, but it was a little too corny for my liking. The American Army saves the day, not enough zombies, not enough creepy solitude that made the original so alluring. But we snuck in and that was fun. Western box office employees: Apathetic!

I was going to try to post something awesome I did every day this summer, but it’s taken me three days to get to a computer since I had the idea. This way I can look back at this here blog when it’s -40, remember how rad this season is and why it’s worth looking forward to.

June 1: the best day of Summer thus far.

Go for beer picnic with a friend in the River Valley. Bring smoked tofu sandwiches, bask in sun, enjoy sounds of moving water and vocal cords. Icy hand-picked blueberries to top it all off. On a porch until the sun comes up.

June 2nd

See the Police. Good show, but why did they rework Don’t Stand So Close to Me, again? The original version is still the best.

June 3.

+30. Wash dishes at favorite Veg Cafe, drink icy Pilsner.
